I saw this headline and immediately thought, ‘oh no, here comes some more ADHD bashing and talk about how ADHD is now soooo trendy etc.’

Then I read the article and did a little celebration!

The article focuses on the facts about ADHD.

Doctors said the increase in diagnoses showed a backlog of undiagnosed cases was finally being addressed by the health system as both the community and doctors learnt more about ADHD.

An increase in numbers should be celebrated 🎉 as this means more people are getting the help and support they need.

Do you know what stops people from seeking help? Stereotypes and myths! All they do is perpetuate stigmas and misinformation, which stops people from getting the vital help they need.

So, as it is #ADHDAwarenessMonth, let’s bust some myths.
👎 People are not jumping on the ADHD bandwagon. It is an expensive and rigorous process to get diagnosed with ADHD. You can’t just decide you have it.

An increase in numbers means:
👍 more women and girls are getting diagnosed – hooray! The male-driven medical narrative is now catching up with the real world.
👍 Increased ADHD awareness means less women are being misdiagnosed with anxiety, depression or bipolar.
👍 Adult numbers are increasing as awareness has led to more parents seeking diagnoses for their children, which in turn helps them realise they should also seek help.

☀ ADHDers have amazing, incredible and unique brains. And while ADHD can negatively impact your life, it also provides them with unique strengths. We just need the opportunity to re-connect with them and shine ☀
